CERRIE was an independent Committee established by the UK Government in 2001, following concerns about the risks of internal radiation. The Committee operated between October 2001 and October 2004.

Although the Committee was set up and sponsored by two UK Government departments, DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and DH (Department of Health), it operated completely independently of them. Its Final Report was not vetted by any Government agency.

Dr Roger Cox

Roger Cox is Head of Radiation Effects Department of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) at Chilton, Oxfordshire. Following PhD research in microbial genetics he joined the MRC Radiobiology Unit at Harwell in 1971 where he was involved in cellular/molecular research relating to post-irradiation cellular repair, mutagenesis and tumour development. At NRPB (1990-date) he has continued to pursue personal research interests in the mechanisms and genetics of radiation tumorigenesis and, for some years, has scientifically co-ordinated multipartner European Union research contracts in this area.

Roger Cox is involved in the work of a variety of national and international committees considering radiation effects and radiological protection (internal and external radiations). These include the NRPB Advisory Group on Ionising Radiation (1995-date), the International Commission on Radiological Protection (1989-date), the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (1989-93 and 1996-date) and the BEIR VII Committee of the US National Academy of Sciences. Roger Cox holds an honorary academic position at Brunel University.
