CERRIE was an independent Committee established by the UK Government in 2001, following concerns about the risks of internal radiation. The Committee operated between October 2001 and October 2004.

Although the Committee was set up and sponsored by two UK Government departments, DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and DH (Department of Health), it operated completely independently of them. Its Final Report was not vetted by any Government agency.

Dr Richard Wakeford

Richard Wakeford is Principal Research Scientist at the BNFL Head Office in Risley, Warrington. After carrying out postgraduate research on sub-nuclear physics he was awarded a PhD from the University of Liverpool in 1978 and after a short period of postdoctoral research joined BNFL, initially at Capenhurst before moving to Risley in 1981. He has been involved in a number of statistically related projects within BNFL, but since the mid-1980s has concentrated upon radiation risks, particularly at low doses.

Dr Wakeford has served on a number of national and international expert panels dealing with low dose radiation risks, including those of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Commission and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He has appeared in the High Court as an expert witness on radiation risks and has also been retained as a consultant on the risks of other exposures.

In 1994, Dr Wakeford was awarded the Founder's Prize of the Society for Radiological Protection for "contributions of distinction to radiological protection" and is currently Honorary Editor of the Journal of Radiological Protection. His main interest is radiation epidemiology, especially low dose studies, specialising in occupational exposures (including internal emitters), cancer clusters and preconceptional and in-utero irradiation.
